Brainrot Meaning: What It Is and Why Everyone Says It

If you have heard a twelve-year-old describe a video as "pure brainrot" and then watch it six more times, you have met the word. It sounds like an insult. Most of the time it is closer to a compliment.

What brainrot means

Brainrot is very silly, very online content: short videos, memes and catchphrases that make no sense out of context and are hard to stop watching. The word also describes what that content feels like it is doing to you. Watch two hours of it and your brain feels like it is turning to mush.

People use it in three ways:

It can be negative, especially when a parent or teacher says it. Between friends it is mostly affectionate. Calling a meme brainrot usually means "this is stupid and I love it".

Where the word came from

The idea is older than the internet. The phrase "brain rot" shows up in 19th-century writing to describe ideas that make people think less. Henry David Thoreau used it in Walden in 1854, complaining that society cared about potato rot but not about the rot of the mind.

The modern meaning took off in the early 2020s on short-video apps, where the endless scroll made the joke obvious. By 2024 it was common enough that Oxford University Press picked "brain rot" as its word of the year.

Today the one-word spelling, "brainrot", is more common online, and it has become a genre. People search for brainrot memes, brainrot songs and brainrot words the way they once searched for "funny videos".

What brainrot memes look like

There is no single format, but most brainrot content shares a few traits:

A good test: if you try to explain a meme to your parents and halfway through you realize the explanation is longer and stranger than the meme, it is brainrot.

Is brainrot bad for you?

The honest answer: in moderation it is just a sense of humor. Every generation had its own nonsense. Kids in the 1990s quoted cartoons until adults wanted to scream, and kids in the 2000s had their own viral videos.

What people usually mean when they worry about brainrot is the endless scroll. Short videos with no natural stopping point make it easy to lose an hour without noticing. The fix most people land on is simple: watch on purpose instead of by default, and do something with an ending, like a game, a show or a book, when you want a break.

Why kids love it

Brainrot works like a secret language. If you know that a certain number is funny, you are in on the joke, and the adult who asks "why is that funny" proves that you are in and they are out. That feeling is the same one that made every older generation invent slang.

It is also simply funny. Absurd humor has always been popular with kids, from nonsense poems to cartoons where anvils fall from the sky. Brainrot is that, sped up.
